Republican Party: Where to From Here?

November 6th, 2008 · No Comments

Don’t Think of an Elephant

John McCain tried to resuscitate a dieing animal. Bush killed it. Perhaps Palin can field dress it.

The Republican Party suffered a humiliating defeat in the USA and it will take a generation to restore and reinvent the Party. Americans had enough of the “divide to conquer” politics of fear and the mismanagement of the economy. Bush achieved more than the socialist Chavez in Venezuela - Bush nationalised the banks.

I don’t mourn the death of the party - it was due to self-inflicted wounds. And I don’t revel in the pending recriminations, name games, reprisals and dismissals. (Imagine staffers trying to find employment in today’s DC!)

I do look forward to the birth of a new elephant. The Republican Party is dead. Long live the Republican Party.

Obama & Rudd: Perfect Partners

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Australia couldn’t ask for a better political partner than Barack Obama. He’s a left-of-centre leader with strong social ideals. He and Kevin Rudd take over from conservative leaders who “divided to conquer” the electorate. Rudd’s global aspirations will be welcomed in Washington DC.

But Australia has more to fear with trade reform likely to be an issue in a Democratic-led Congress. Protectionism was a theme in the primaries - expect it to become a mantra in a Democrat-dominated Congress.

Also - excuse me, Australia - Obama has so many more fish to fry. He’s likely to be distracted his first two years. We’ll be lucky if we get a mention, let alone any attention.

Obama inherits a perilous nation already in recession and heading towards a Depression - not to mention two active wars and numerous conflicts bubbling.

While Kevin and Barack will get along famously our Prime Minister may be left waiting in the antechamber of power for some time.

Rudd for Obama

Pyrrhic Victory

November 5th, 2008 · No Comments

Be careful what you wish for - you just might get it. This proverb was never more relevant than today. While McCain accused Obama of “measuring the White House for curtains” both were most likely considering the aftermath. The successful candidate inherits a broken economy, an unwinnable war, a growing threat in Afghanistan and Pakistan - and that’s all before inauguration day.

“The Week” - a new magazine in AustraliaI have to share this cover - off the latest current affairs magazine to launch on Australia (learn more about The Week at their website).

Good luck - may the best man win!

McCain + Comedy = ???

November 4th, 2008 · No Comments

I can’t stomach this election campaign any longer - thank God Americans vote today and it all ends. I finaly got to see “Saturday Night Live” and I do not understand why John McCain agree to the show. It lampoons his running mate, his policies and his wife. John McCain showed he cannot be trusted with the presidency. It was a clownish act by a buffoon - not a national leader.

See the video at Saturday Night Live.
